Gorgeous Salish moon mask carved in red cedar by First Nations artist Darren Joseph.It is 33\" in height and 20\" in width including cedarbark.
The mask itself is 20\" height and 16\" width and 5 1/2\" in depth. Pictures taken indoors with and without lighting.Deeply carved and striking colors blended together with sheer perfection. A fabulous serene look on its face. Adorned with freshly harvested cedar bark which gives just adds to this powerful moon sculpture. Darren Joseph is Coast Salish and grew up in North Vancouver, British Columbia. His ancestral name is Shmoqwilum, which he received when he was 17 years old. Darren is focused on delivering Coast Salish and Northwest Coast traditional and contemporary arts and crafts. Darren specializes in wood carvings that include: totem poles, canoes, panels, rattles, masks, prints, custom orders and designs by request.
Darren began sketching and carving, as a hobby, at the young age of 7. Darren has always been surrounded by Native art and culture throughout his life. His lifestyle is strongly based on his traditional values and beliefs that he was brought up with, and taught by his family and respected elders.
Darren started his apprenticeship in 2003 with several renowned First Nations artists. Darren studied Coast Salish and Northwest Coast forums of Northern Tutchone, and Haida art styles. Darren has had the opportunity to work with several private and public art commissions that include: art galleries, art collectors, First Nations communities, First Nations organizations, school districts and Municipalities to produce and complete selected hand carved orders and designs.
In March of 2009 Darren was a featured artist at an art show in Whistler, BC. As the featured artist Darren worked in collaboration with the Gallery to produce and design custom selected wood carvings that include: alder, red and yellow cedar to produce and complete the feature pieces. In May 2013 Darren recently completed a nine foot Welcome figure with Sliammon First Nation. Darren designed, produced blue prints and liaised with key stakeholders and mentored selected youth and students to complete the nine foot hand carved Welcome figure.
Darren is committed to carrying out his work in a responsible manner that reflects his teachings. Darren’s shares the stories and legends of First Nation peoples through his work. His intention is to keep Aboriginal culture alive through his artwork today, and for the next generations to come.
Darren plans to continue learning and sharing the traditional values which inspires his art work and designs. Darren strives to innovate his designs and find different mediums and materials to deliver authentic Coast Salish and Northwest Coast traditional and contemporary arts and crafts that share the history of Aboriginal people.
