A pair of late 19th century Cochiti pueblo (southwest united states) effigy pots most likely of small desert animals. Theses figures date from the 1890\'s to ca 1915 and are rarely saleed. The two pieces have pencil marks indicating they are from the Tesque/Acoma pueblo\'s. These have been misidentified most likely by a former owner, as is common with these old pieces. At the time they were made no potters signed or marked their pottery, any marks were added by someone else and were often incorrect. These are classic early Cochiti fiqures. The clay body used is the key to identification. Cochiti fires orange(visible on chipped ear). The Cochiti firing technique creates the characteristic blurred lines and smokey fire cloud on the white slip . The open mouth, use of black dots and \"leaf\" are definitely characteristic of Cochiti. They measure 3.5\" tall and 2.5\" wide at the base. their current condition, small chip inside the open mouth and on ear and flaked paint in a few places, however the over all condition of both pieces is very good for their age. They have been valued at 1000 to 1500 as few survive and rarely come up for sale. Thank you for your consideration!
