Vintage, brass Put & Take: excellent and easy spinner, textured knob at end of handle, polished golden yellow, plus rules of the game

DESCRIPTION: (Don\'t overlook the \"RICH HISTORY OF PUT & TAKES\" paragraph below.) Up for sale, at low opening offer, is a unique, vintage (early 20th century), brass Put & Take. I have never seen a duplicate one:

nice size, weight and heft -- makes it look good and easy to pick up and spin.
superior spinner: every time easy to spin, and you get a long, smooth, quiet, upright spin. Note: many Put & Takes do not spin well at all; some are off balance and flop about more than half of the spinning attempts. You can offer here in confidence that the top offered here spins correctly every time.
polished by me to a golden glow. I received it with a very dark patina, so I polished it to make it more readable and beautiful.
textured knob at end of handle.

RICH HISTORY OF PUT & TAKES: Throughout history, people have played and gambled with spinning tops such as teetotums and dreidels , both of which are predecessors of Put & Take tops. The six- and eight-sided Put & Takes of today were developed and popularized by the doughboys in the trenches of World War I. Since then, a tavern patron, a school boy -- anyone! -- could carry a virtual casino in his pocket in the form of a Put & Take top, and could start an impromptu gambling session on a bar counter, school playground or table top. The players would ante to form a pot, and then take turns spinning the top and winning (\"take\") or losing (\"put\") chips from or into the pot as commanded by the inscription on the upper side of the fallen Put & Take top. The Put & Take craze enveloped the world in the 1920s and 30s, as seen everywhere in games, newspaper stories, songs, plays, movies, punchboards, and reform movements to outlaw the spinners and games. RULES OF PLAY: I\'ll send rules along with the Put & Take to the winner of this sale. Suffice to say here that the players ante into a pot and take turns spinning the top. The one who spun follows the command on the upper surface of the resting top -- for examples: if \"take one\" or \"T1\" surfaces, he takes for himself one chip from the pot; if \"put two\" or \"P2\" surfaces, he puts two of his chips into the pot, and if \"take all\" or \"TA\" shows, he takes the entire pot. If \"all put\" or \"AP\" shows, all the players put one chip into the pot. There are variations to these rules, of course.

CONDITION: fine, no problems other than a few scratches..
