RARE ANTIQUE (1919-1923) HICKORY \"WATERFALL\" SLOTTED GOLF CLUB IRON \'DEDSTOP\":
$259.00

The \"Waterfall\" and other deep slotted-deep grooved clubs were made for only a short period since the Royal & Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews banned this type of iron from professional play in 1920. At the turn of the century the U.S. was coming into it\'s own and the first growth span of the sport took hold in the Country. Americans were creating a presence in both club making as well as play in the hallowed \"Home of Golf\". It\'s no coincidence that the club design was deemed illegal by the R&A a week after Jock Hutchison (Scottish born and naturalized American citizen) won the 1921 British Open using a deep slotted club. The USGA would follow suit not long after.
The club is a desirable collectible not only for its uniqueness but also its rarity. Specifically, it is stamped (bottom of blade) \"F-17 DEDSTOP PITCHER\". J.M. Cooper, creator of the extensive and definitive guide for early A.G. Spalding & Bros. golf clubs ranks the rarity of the F-17 DEDSTOP at a \"7\" on scale range between 3 and 7. \"Unique\" is top of the scaling which means a club virtually one of a kind. A \"7\" notes that an estimate of between 2 and 100 of the clubs are in existence.
The club shaft and hosel are solid and firm and there\'s nothing to indicate its nothing but original. The club has been played in its day so there is a ding and minor scuffing on the bottom edge but the club face is surprisingly clean. Hopefully the photos show any flaws with clarity. Other photos can be taken but not until my damaged camera is replaced. The smooth leather grip is tight and may be original but am not positive. The string whipping is also tight and I couldn\'t say if that was redone either, all of it appears to belong together. I purchased the club from a very reputable collector years ago and now I\'m ready to trim my own collection. I\'m starting the club at a low reserve (comparatively); \"buy high and sell low\" has become my motto.
Shipping to U.S. only unless prior arrangements have been made, thanks for looking.
