Patent for Grand Slam 1933
Here’s an excellent Comoy’s GRAND SLAM PATENT pipe bowl, needs a stem. It’s actually a PAT. PENDING model. This one is a nice early example from the 1933 timeframe or soon thereafter, and has rare U.S. Patent stamp as well. It’s got some cool stampings and this is worth getting a stem made for it.
The first models were marked PATENT below the GRAND SLAM, stamped for the Patent they had on the filter fitment. So on the bottom this one also includes PAT. PENDING plus *2 for the diameter of the leather gasket. In addition on the right side is the U.S. PAT 2001622. This pipe also has the early “Country of Manufacture” (or COM) stamp of “Made In England” (with IN at the center of the Circular stamp). This also indicates a likely 1930’s dating.
The bowl shows high quality briar and you might notice the shank is reinforced to not crack with in inlaid metal ring, a great early innovation by Comoy’s. This in a nice example of the earliest Grand Slam PATENT pipe and hopefully a collector will get a stem made for a fine pipe.

The registration in 1933 of the Trade-Mark \"Grand Slam\" by Comoy\'s of London, and an ad for the Grand Slam is known from 1936. Approximately 1938 through the early to mid-forties or so, has the same \"COMOY\'S\" stamp and grade, with the country of origin changing to the circular \"MADE IN ENGLAND,\" the word \"IN\" in the center of the circle formed by the words \"MADE\" and \"ENGLAND.\"
