Rare Glasgow School of Arts & Crafts galleon brass sconce by Margaret Gilmour:
$610.00

This is a rare period piece from the celebrated Glasgow Arts & Crafts (aka \"Scottish Movement\") centered around Charles Rennie Mackintosh that included a group of remarkably talented women artists, notably the sisters Margaret and Mary Gilmour, designers of metalwork. This piece, a beautiful two-candle wall sconce, is unsigned but almost certainly the work of Margaret Gilmour who was known for these repousse and engraved galleon motifs on a circular, concave head plate such as this one.

Scottish Movement Arts & Crafts metalwork at its very best, strong perpendicular lines created by the central dotted ribs motif, flanked by riveted straps that extend and loop to form candle arms, and cleverly balanced, artistically, with a convex disk and galleon scene head plate. The sconces are copper and fitted inside with a shim to receive a bayonet-style light bulb. Also drilled to accommodate wiring, but clearly never actually electrified. The small residue of candle wax suggests this piece has only ever been used with candles.

This listing closes Thursday evening (US Eastern time).

Maker\'s mark:Unmarked, but apparently most of Margaret Gilmour\'s work was unmarked.

Date:1910 - 1920.

Condition:Excellent. No damage or losses. Just the minor quirks of a truly handmade example of brass work. There\'s a small amount of wiggle in the pair of rivets attaching each bobeche to the straps. Please see photos for cosmetic condition.

Size:Sconce is 25 inches (63 cm) high and 8 1/2 inches (22 cm) across the disk. Weighs about 3 lbs (1.3 kg)
