Please do not forget that giving a name to the bead patterns is typical usage of western people and go back up the last 100 years. The Pumtek (literally \"buried thunderbolt\") beads are part of heirloom among the Chin.Wearing these beads was seen as a display of position and wealth within the tribe and they also acted as protective amulets. Perhaps it was also believed that they were imbued with the power of past ancestors. The material, fossil palmwood, is a variety of non-precious opal. They are etched like dZi beads, and, also for them, no one is sure of the exact process by which the beads were etched, (or, better, bleached).
