The nickel silver medal is made in Italy. It is brand new, made of nickel silver, and is7/8\" tall with just a bit of oxidation here and there to show details.Beautifully detailed witha very graceful figure of the Blessed Virgin Mary; it is very traditional with Latin wording around the figure. They read \"Regina Sine Labe Originali Concepta O.P.N.\" On the reversearethe familiar \"M\", Cross, Hearts and Stars; nicely detailed.

The 24\" continuous stainless steel chainis easy to slip on and off over your head without worrying about anyclasp coming undone. Fits over most heads.Most Italian nickel silver such as this medal have been treatedboth to show some\"vintage\" oxidation and to retain the finish longer. However, these medals do react to certain chemicals, soaps, and body chemistry. To prolong the finish on any nickel silver medalremove it before showering or swimming inchlorine pools or salt water, and before coloring or straightening hair; andallow creams, lotions, perfumes and other toiletries todry before putting the medal back on.(This is good advice to prolong the life of any jewelry!)Silver polish can be used toremove tarnish if desired.

There have been so many miracles associated with this medal since it was first created in the year 1830 that is has come to be called the Miraculous Medal.

The Miraculous Medal was designed by the Mother of Jesus herself. She appeared to a young, humble nun in a convent in France in the early 19th century. Mary gave this young woman, whose name was Catherine Laboure, a mission - to have a medal struck according to her own design - and she both explained and showed the design to St Catherine - and to spread devotion to Jesus through His Mother via her Miraculous Medal. Mary knows that when people draw close to her, she can then draw them closer to Jesus.When the medal was finally struck and began production in 1832, miracles started happening, and so the medal received its name.
