A very rare American Surveying compass by Benjamin Rittenhouse and nephew Benjamin Evans. Signed by engraved block letters on the silvered compass face \"Rittenhouse Evans\". The compass is 14\" in length with a 5: winged-hub needle, a single bubble level, a variation index to 15 degrees, original sight vanes and socket, and domed compass cover. The sight vane screws are later, I believe, as they are not knurled. The needle lifter screw is a very early pewter replacement. This affiliation lasted from 1790 to 1797. There are six known Rittenhouse Evans compasses, two of which are vernier compasses, this example and one in the Smithsonian collection.
A rare opportunity to add to your collection, a very early and important American instrument by one of the premier Philadelphia makers. Questions? Dale: [phone removed by ] Central Time or email.
