\"The Juggler\" bookend art statue Pompeian Bronze + listed artist Colinet, 1920\'s:
$150.00

Absolutely charming statue of a nude girl, on tiptoe, balancing balls in each hand and one free foot. Modeled after the early 1900\'s statue \"The Juggler\" by Claire Colinet.
The piece is electro-formed (more commonly known as bronze-clad), a manufacturing technique whereby a skin of bronze is made to adhere to a plaster form thru the chemical process of electro-plating. You can see in the bottom the metal hook that was used to suspend the piece in a vat of some solution. A handful of companies used this method in the early 1900\'s to produce decorative household objects that had the look, feel and heft of solid bronze pieces but still were affordable by the middle class.
One of those companies was Pompeian Bronze, which operated in NYC in late 19-teens, early \'20s. The piece does not bear a maker\'s mark but I have an original Pompeian Bronze catalogue and this piece is included. Actually, Pompeian Bronze used the design as the decorative element on a variety of products: a set of bookends, a bud vase, and 2 different-sized \"Art Objects\", Pompeian\'s term for stand-alone statues. Mine is the smaller of the statues at 8 1/2 inches tall; the larger was 20 inches tall. Also fun is Pompeian\'s price list: the smaller statue wholesaled for $7; the larger, $45.
Condition is excellent, no breaks in the cladding, no mashed parts, no bent or cracked limbs - remarkable that such delicate structures have remained undamaged all this time. A minor dent in the side of the base and a bit of a wrinkle in the cladding at the supporting foot as well as at her neck. You will have wrinkles, too, when you are 90 years old. Finish is original, a few spots of verdigris and flea-bite nicks, otherwise is in wonderful shape. The piece sits flat and steady.
A lovely, thoughtful gift to adorn the desk or mantel of a loved one.
US shipping only. USPS priority mail, insurance and delivery confirmation. If you live close enough that parcel post would be cheaper, I will do that. I pack with care and do not profit from S&H.
