Classic crystalline glazed porcelain vase by Thomas Gotham, West Coast Porcelain Manufacturers. Thomas Gotham (1872 - 1941) has been associated with California Faience & California Pottery. Any work by Thomas Gotham is seldom seen on the open market, by far, the majority are unsigned. Original notations under the glaze, the number \"96\", \"6\" and the number \"982\" which is under two diagonal lines. I have included two images of the vase alongside a signed vase of the same shape, This sale is for the unsigned vase only.
The vase is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks or repairs, there are around 6 tiny glaze pops which are considered minor factory flaws versus damage. A glaze pop is a popped air bubble that burst at the surface of the glaze during firing. I have included images of all three sides of the vase and a close-up of one of the glaze pops. There is a slight irregularity to the opening of the vase as shown in the close up. I mention the minor apolgies for the sake of accuracy as they do not distract from the overall visual impact of the vase in any way. As with most of his work, the clarity, depth and variety of color in the crystalline glaze and the contrast of the refraction of light from the varying textures of the matte and gloss areas make this a very attractive and interesting vase.
Likely produced when he was working at West Coast Porcelain Manufacturers in the mid-twenties. The value of his work has been escalating dramatically in recent years. This beautiful vase would be an excellent addition to any California art pottery, Arts and Crafts, or museum collection. Measures 8+\" tall by 4 3/4\" wide.
