The History of Avon
Avon Founder David HMcConnell offered women a rarity in the 19th century America: A chance atfinancial independence. In 1886, it was practically unheard of for a woman torun her own business. Only about 5 million women in the USA were workingoutside the family home, let alone able to climb the ranks of any corporateladder. That number accounted for just 20% of all women. Most women worked in factories& that was not a glamorous job, on top of that women’s wages across theboard were a fraction of men\'s wages at the time. For many women, McConnellwould radically alter that scenario. The man behind the company of women wasthe son of an Irish immigrant & grew up on a farm. Yet, it was this youngman who was a visionary leader decades ahead of his time, who became a pioneerin empowering women. McConnell, a bookseller by trade, would offer women theopportunity to create & manage their own businesses through what later becameknown as \"Direct Selling\" or \"Door to Door\" selling.McConnell made two important discoveries in his travels as a book salesman.First, he quickly noticed that his female customers were far more interested inthe free perfume samples he offered than they were in the books he was tryingto sell. Second, he saw how women were struggling to make ends meet &recognized that many of them would make natural salespeople, who would relateeasily to other women & would passionately sell the products his new companywould first sell - perfumes! McConnell opened up his first company called\"The California Perfume Company\" Years later - AVON was born!
