This isan originalsheet of paper(it\'s real deal--this is NOT a reproduction)called a \"wrapper\" that wasfolded by a letter-writter to resemble an envelope and to contain a now-gone letterafter it was written to be taken tothe post office by and mailed. It is a \"stampless folded wrapper.\" You are purchasingonly the postalportion, as pictured and described below. I do not have the letter.

Once the letter was written, the entire item was sealed by the sender with a drop of sealing wax to seal the letter to provide security. The seal would be broken upon receipt by the addressee.

ONE of the reasonsthis itemis collectible isbecause of the fact thatthe local postmaster applied postal markings considered appropriate for the letter\'s journey. In addition to being collectable because of the content of the letter, or the writer,or the addressee, or clues about the letter that was once present,it is a collectable item of the markings.

This particular item has a highly-desirable \"manuscript\" town marking. \"Manuscript Markings\" are extremely collectible because of their scarce nature insomuch as the town postmaster had such a small volume of mail, a handstamp device was not practable.

This is afull wrapper, not just a front or small portion.

Very early \"WINCHESTER VA. JULY\" circular datestamp with \"23\" written in manuscript addressed to \"His Excellency Wilson C. Nicholass [SIC - it should be \"Nicholas\", Gov. Virga., Richmond\"

Governor Nicholas was the 19th governor of Virginia who served from 1814-1816.

\"25 1/2\" rate.I believe this to be aWAR Rate, which would make the date between February 1, 1815 andFebruary 1, 1816. 150%(the war rate surcharge) of the 17 cent 150-300 mile rate (certainly the rate from Winchester to Richmond) would be 25 1/2. The \"July 23\" date in the CDS makes this an 1815 usage.

Upon receipt, the addressee wrote \"H. Holmes ansd.\" on the inside flap.

Exceptionally nice paper quality and condition.
