Dinosaur Gem Bone

This is a really nice little rib cross section. The outer rind of the bone has deteriorated leaving a core of nicely agatized material. This is a hard piece of bone and took a great polish!

The polished face is 2\" x 9/16\" and it is 3” in length. It weighs 183.6 grams (over 6 ounces).

The photographs show all sides of the specimen and the macro-photographs exhibit the beautiful detail of this piece. The true beauty of bone is in the micro-detail (especially when viewed in direct sunlight)! This specimen is not artificially colored or altered in any manner!

Agatized dinosaur bone can only be found on the Colorado Plateau in the Brushy Basin member of the Morrison Formation. This stratum was laid down 146 to 156,000,000 years ago, corresponding to the Late Jurassic period. The dinosaurs that inhabited this region during the Late Jurassic included Allosaurus, Apatosaurus, Brachiosaurus, Camarasaurus, Diplodocus, Stegosaurus, and Torvosaurus (a theropod nearly the size of Tyrannosaurus), to name just a few!
