This headdress is worn by a seated chief whilst watching the ram ceremony amongst other chiefs.

While the serene representation of the human face is what made the Baule famous, they are no less skilled in producing zoomorphic carvings of great beauty, with the well-known ram masks among the most-prized. \'Gba gba\' serve as much to entertain as they comment upon social behavior and are followed in the performance by horned masks representing wild animals that are â??huntedâ?? and killed during the performance.T

his mask was carved in a single piece of wood and was worn on the top of the head.

Among the Baule people of Cote d\'Ivoire Zoomorphic masks such as this wonderful ram mask represent bush spirits. Certain sources refer to this type of mask as an agricultural spirit. In general, Baule masks such as this appear in villages during various festivals, where they perform various typecast characters living in the village and zoomorphic behavior and qualities that may be compared to that of the humans. The ram mask has many male attributes and symbolizes a male character. His strong and beautiful spiral horns signify strength and power.

The Baule are members of the Akan peoples, who inhabit Ghana and Côte d\'Ivoire. During the 18th century, the Baule people migrated westward from Ghana when the Asante rose to power. The story of how they managed to break away from them has been preserved in their oral traditions. During the emergence of the Asante the Baule queen, Aura Poku, was in direct conflict with the Asante king, and when the Asante prevailed, the queen led her people away to the land they now occupy. Baule mythology holds that she had to sacrifice her son to the river god in order to complete the exodus safely. The male descendant of Aura Poku still lives in the original palace she established, and is honored by the Baule as their symbolic king. The Baule today are the most powerful group in Cote d\'Ivoire, admired as highly skilled politicians, as well as talented artists, who have produced some of the most elegant objects known in West Africa.

Much of theprofits raised from this sale will go alittle way to help some impoverished children and villagers in the Moyen Cavally Region of Cote D\'Ivoire and Liberia. We are supporting an orphanage there as well as several villages to which we supply seeds, food and clean water solutions.

WELCOMETO

THE AFRICANTRIBALCOLLECTION

Excellent quality Tribal Art at sensible prices

We are a husband and wife team based in the UK with strong personal links to Ghana and much of West Africa. Over the past few decades we have been passionate collectors of African antiqueswith particular interest in tribally used ceremonial masks and figures. Wehave both previously lived in West Africa formore than15 years and have an extensive personal collection from our travels around Africa.

My husband Steve is also the \"tribal expert\" and appraiser for the European based \'Fine Tribal Gallery\'.Headvises new and established collectors, other dealers and museums on tribal art and also conducts exhibitions and seminars.

African tribal art has been verysought afterover the past decades and it is commonly known thattribal art has been plundered during this timeand many \'copies\' have entered the market. However, with the right knowledge and expertise it isstill possible to findnice authentic tribal art piecesin Africa.

We arein Africa several times a year looking after our aid projects, but also searching for tribal treasures from \'untapped\'sources. This is what we love, and our travels involve going deep into bush to theremote villages. Our passion is for rare tribally used artefacts with excellent \'style\'and \'patina\' which move us. The sources forourtribal pieces stretch across Africafrom Sierra Leone,Cote D\'Ivoire, Mali,Nigeria etcand down as far as the Congo.

We have awarehouse andan outlet situated on the beachfront in Accra in Ghana where everything is shipped to us from. We initially store the treasures from our African hunting trip here, andall pieces are vetted by Nationaal Museum curators and fumigated prior to shipment. Upon arrival in the UK, the pieces are re-checked for mould and any evidence of insects before we enter them into our collection.

We have local experts in West Africa and we utilise their knowledge of the woods used and the carving styles of the relevant tribes to help assess the age and authenticity of the pieces.

To keep up to date with the tribal art market weregularly attendsales worldwide such as Sotheby\'s, Christie\'s andBonham\'s and we have hadmany of our pieces appraised by other well known collectors, like the eminent\'Jean Baptiste Bacquart\' in Paris.

The African TribalCollection although part of \'Fair Trade Ghana\' is not a registered charity in the UK, but we are nonetheless passionate about Africa andtribal art andweare doingwhat we canto support various villages inGhana,Cote D\'Ivoire, Maliandelsewhere in West Africa.Michaela alsouses \'FairTradeGhana\' to help support local artisans and villages.

We also work with and support 2 other amazing charities \'WaterAid\' \'WWFA\' (Water Wells for Africa) http://waterwellsforafrica.org/helping toprovide \'clean water\' solutions to many villages.

Please Google \'fairtradeghana\' for more info on projects.

Please note that we tend not to take pictures in a studio Environment. We try to take the pictures in Africa where we find the items. Prior to shipment from Africa we fumigate the pieces but we do not polish or clean them with chemicals, meaning that buyers receive the pieces as they were found. This, we believe,is part of the authentic African experience we try to offer.

We always welcome questions, please email us via or michaelaberko@hotmail.com

We send pieces securely packed andby recorded delivery + insurance

We reserve the right to relist items not paid for within 7 days
