Protected Cruiser in 1/1200 scale

This is a model of the projected Protected Cruiser of the TsaristNavy, the Russian Navy OLEG. The OLEG was one of the four projected BOGATYRclass Protected Cruisers, the other two being KAGUL and PAMIAT MERKURIA.Laid down in 1902, and commissioned into the Baltic Fleet in1904. As the Russo-Japanese War was thenin progress, she was detached to the Second Pacific Fleet and sailed to the FarEast.

OLEG participated in the Battle of Tsushima, where she was damaged,but managed to escape to the Port of Manila, where she was interned for therest of the war. Returned to the BalticFleet, during World War One, OLEG and BOGATYR covered minelaying operations,and was credited with the sinking of the SMS AUGSBURG. In 2015, OLEG participated in the Battle ofAland Islands, where the SMS ALBATROS was beached.

During the October Revolution in 1917, OLEG declared support forthe Bolshevik side. Forced to evacuatefrom Helsinki in 1918, during the “Ice Voyage”, OLEG and BOGATYR later participatedin the Red Army’s attempted invasion of Estonia. OLEG was torpedoed and sunk bythe British speedboat CMB-4 during a raid on Kronstadt in 1919. The hulk was raised and scrapped in 1938.

OLEG was 440 feet long, 54 feet wide and of 6,975 tons displacement,and was capable of speeds up to 23 knots. She carried twelve 6” guns, twelve11 pounder guns and two torpedo tubes. She had a complement of 576 men.

The internationally renowned Mastermodeler John Youngerman is the maker of this model. Each model isindividually built of wood and other material in 1/1200 Recognition Scale,where each inch represents one hundred feet of the real ship. This modelis about 4 ½” inches long. No two ships are identical. These arenot used or secondhand, but were shipped directly from the maker in Elk Grove,California. John Youngerman also makes master models for several overseasmetal ship casting firms.

The model is new and in excellentcondition. Some pertinent information is on a sticker on the bottom, aswell as John’s maker’s signature. The ship is hand painted and detailedby John as well.
