1/6 PLATE AMBROTYPE OF RARE PAINTING - AN INVENTOR & HIS INVENTION- NOTE: I HAVE ADDED NEW DETAILED PHOTOSYou are pondering a very unusual and what I believe to be a very rare ambrotype of a painting. Why you ask? My theory is that the painting of a scholarly man holding his spectacles, is actually an inventor. In the upper right of the image the artist has created, a painting within a painting, which hangs on the wall behind this dominate central figure. What I feel we are looking at is simply, an inventor standing in front of his invention. After the introduction of photography, inventors were able to have their prototypes or models of their inventions included in a photograph, so they could submit their item to the U.S. Patent Department to establish ownership of their intellectual property. I truly feel what we have here is the same thing, but prior to the invention of photography. The man captured on this ambrotype must have commissioned a painter to create a painted facsimile of him with his own invention. So what is the item in the upper right corner? The image appears to be a type of Greenhouse or Composting System. I have included a cropped scan for a better view. Under a loop, I was able to see there is a beehive shaped mound that has been hand tinted red. The red mound sits under what appears to be a simple greenhouse structure. Whatever this invention might be, we must remember how unique the original painting was, as well as this ambrotype taken of the original piece of art. A fantastic ambrotype of an occupational painting, a historic record, which possibly represents a horticultural breakthrough by the man pictured before you. I only wish I knew more about this individual and the mysterious meaning behind the image painted into the background. A great addition to someones occupational photography collection or to a collector of early Patented inventions.
Note: I have recently added a more accurate photo in addition to my detailed scans. Truly a winner of an ambro for your collection.CONDITION: Please view my detailed scans for the actual condition. The gentleman has a couple dirty spots on his face and their are several more in the upper right area of the image which do not overpower the rareness of this subject matter. The sixth plate is housed in a full case with a nicely repaired hinge, two working clasps and a red velvet pillow. Please feel free to view my other items I have listed in my store!See \"ABOUT ME\"; click the \"me\" icon next to my ID nic-o-matic for more information regarding my new website of 19th Century Photographic imagery I have for sale.U.S. buyers only please!
