1/6 PLATE TINTYPE - UNUSUAL POST MORTEM IN EXTREMELY RARE ALL BRASS CASE - CASE NOT PICTURED IN BERG - LOOK! - You are offerding on the nicest cased Post Mortem tintype I have ever offered on . Obviously an extremely loved child; as his parents went to great lengths to have him captured on this lovely sixth plate and then, they purchased the finest solid brass case to help protect this final memory of their son. The tintype image itself is rather unusual in that the photographer has raised the head of the crib or bed. Propping up the child in this diagonal position allowed the boy to be seen more easily than in the traditional prone position of most Post Mortem images. The boy was then wrapped in a plaid blanket, his hair nicely groomed and the exposure was captured before he was laid to eternal rest. These Momento Mori images were held dearly by families and not only used to remember the face of a lost family member, but to aid the mourning and grieving process. Although sometimes thought today as a moroffer form of photography, these images would sometimes be the only photographic memory of a persons life. We also need to remember that during the 19th Century many families were responsible for burying their loved ones prior to the invention of Undertakers and Funeral Homes. The process of which people dealt with the passing of their closest loved ones was a more personal and in some ways, a more lengthy and respectful ritual. Post Mortem images, were a large part of this 19th Century tradition. I cannot tell you how rare this solid brass case is, but the case is definitely not pictured in Paul Berg\'s bible on cases and frames. From the beautifully embossed brass exterior, to the exquisite matching rails and velvet pillow, we are looking at an extremely rare case in which this child\'s last known image was placed. I have not seen another case like this one in my years of collecting and would guess there to be less than ten known in existence. The brass mat surrounding the tintype was carefully selected to match the colorization of the exterior of the case. NOTE: In my last photo, the dark area in the center of the right side of the exterior is caused by my scanner; both brass sides of the case are identical in the center and appear like the left side in your hand. The exterior of the case measures: 3 3/8\" H X 3\" W X 3/4\" DYou are considering in my listing a magnificent example of a moving Post Mortem image and presented in stunning solid brass case.Condition: Please view my detailed scans for the actual condition. The sixth plate is pristine, is in sharp focus, contains beautiful tonal range and nice contrast. The brass case is absolutely fabulous. The case has a very nice metal hinge that runs the length of the spine. The case does not have a latch. The embossing is breathtaking and the velvet pillow and rails are immaculate. A truly impressive presentation piece for your fine collection of 19th Century cased images. Please feel free to view my other items I have listed in my store!See \"ABOUT ME\"; click the \"me\" icon next to my ID nic-o-matic for more information regarding my new website of 19th Century Photographic imagery I have for sale.U.S. buyers only please!
