Really nice and unique grouping of original Vietnam War squadron and novelty patches, belonged to SSGT L.D. Johnson, USMC. These patches are all original SE Asia-made during the time of the VN war, pre-1975.I removed all of these patches from a 1980s military-style civilian jacket that Johnson would have worn to reunions etc. The patches had been loosely hand-stitched on the jacket.
I believe some of these patches should be fairly rare. From the non-flight status of Johnson\'s name-plate, and from the inclusion of the \'turnaround crew\' patch, it would seem likely that Johnson was ground crew for VMFA 232 at MCAS Rose Garden, Nam Phong, Thailand, in 1972.
Patches are as follows:
: - Squadron / Air Base / unit patches,Vietnamese or Thai made: \'VMFA 232\', and \'Turn-around crew\' and \'MCAS Rose Garden\' all show matching and even grubbiness from service wear. All three show signs of having been machine-sewn to a uniform.
: - USMC novelty patches, Vietnamese or Thai made: $65 a day\', and \'join the Marines\', and \'Hearts and Minds\': - these are all woven on a fairly stiff starched cotton, and are in unused, pristine condition.
: - \'Last Day in Vietnam\' - again in unused condition, I believe this refers to the fact that VMFA 232 was the last Marine squadron to leave Vietnam, September 1973. After this date they were based in Japan, so probably that is where this commemorative patch was made.
:- \'Marines\' and \'USMC\' - these have merrowed edge and cheese-cloth backing. I assume these are the sort of novelty patches that could be picked up in any PX, possibly Japan made.
:- finally, a brown leather gold-embossed USMC nameplate, shows signs of having been machine-stitched to a uniform.
This is an interesting group worthy of further research, and it should be possible to trace Johnson\'s service history further. All are original, real \'70s wartime patches and this group has always been together. I have tried to include as much detail as possible in the images. Any questions, please let me know.
