Tobacco GROWING FACTS:

Virginia Tobacco is the most flavorful Tobacco there is. Canadian cigarettes mostly use 100% Virginia Tobacco. Tobacco was once used as currency in the south and was very valued. You will need 1/2 pound of dried Tobacco leaves to make a carton of cigarettes. One plant will approximately supply around 2 to 3 ounces. So for one carton you would need around 3 to 4 plants. Each plant at maturity will be around 5 ft tall by 3 ft wide. Will get bright chartruese flowers mid summer to early fall. You should start your seed indoors and wait about 60 days before transplanting outdoors. Make sure the last frost is over. Plant them in rows 2 to 4 ft apart. 60 days from transplanting in the ground outdoors you will have mature Tobacco plants. Wait till the leaves start turning a gold color before harvesting. 2 ways to harvest - cut the leaves individually and bundle 10 to 12 per bunch and hang to dry in a barn or a dark airy place. Or cut the plant from the base and stack in large piles. The Tobacco has to go thru a curing phase to taste good. It needs to generate heat up to 130 degrees. Turn the pile every day for 5 days. Another easier way in smaller quantities to cure is after the leaves are dried, rewet the leaves till soft and then place them in a plastic bag and put it in your car in the hot sun. Check twice a day and when you open the bag if it smells like ammonia it is done. Redry the leaves. Then cut with scissors into small pieces and put in dry airtight ziplocks and date them. The development of ammonia releases nicotine from the leaf and changes any bad taste in Tobacco to excellent tasting Tobacco. Virginia Tobacco has a high sugar and aromatic content in the leaves which makes it an excellent Tobacco. They say you should wait a few years before using this Tobacco so it ages. Just like wine it gets finer with age. You can however smoke it now.

Germination of this seed has been rated at 95% - However expect after growing the seed and weeding out the weak plants that for every 100 seeds you will get about half or slightly less. The seed is very small and you should use white paper to put the seed on. Then have your soil ready which you should get a soiless potting soil and take your fingertip and touch the seeds and put on top of the soil and tamp it down lightly. Lightly cover with soil that you have sifted to make it tiny and fluffy. Only do a sprinkle to cover. Then take a spray bottle and moisten. Keep evenly moist. Do not expect your seeds to germinate right away. May take several weeks. Make sure you keep them warm and give adequate light. For the extra seeds that you do not use, put them in a double ziplock bags and put in your refrigerator in a dry place. The seed will keep for years.
