Item: 14K solid gold cigarette case owned by James J. Walker from American Amateur Golfer Bobby Jones.. All off our Mayor Walker items were salvaged from an abandoned storage locker belonging to the daughter of Mayor James John Walker. These items were listed with Bonhams Action Co. in San Francisco but our client decided to pull them from the sale. Please contact us for a copy of the Bonhams listing if desired.

Depth: 1/4\"Weight: 4.6 ozMarked: \"14K\" Under the filigree bar, and on the side of the case \" Gorham mark: Anchor (with lion intertwined), 14K X 2245 G\"History: James John Walker ( Jimmy Walker and Beau James) Born June 19, 1881 and died November 18, 1946. After years in the senate walker was elected democratic mayor of New York in 1926 to 1932. He created the Department of Sanitation, unified New York\'s hospitals, and guided the board of Transportation to enter into contract for construction for the expansion of the subway system. He also sponsored the \"Walker Law\", which legalized boxing in New York, he is a member of the International Boxing Hall of Fame, and was given the Neil Trophy in 1945 for his service in the sport. Walker was also know for the proliferation of speakeasies during the Prohibition. Strongly opposed to Prohibition he replaced the police commissioner, who dissolved the Special Service Squad, and discouraged police from enforcing the Prohibition law. His affairs with \"Chorus Girls\" were widely known, and he left his wife for showgirl Betty Compton. Walker caused his own downfall, after re-election in 1929 and the Stock Market Crash, cardinal bishop denounced him because of his political toleration of \"girlie magazines\", casinos, and by accepting large sums of money from businessmen looking for municipal contracts. Political organization, Tammany Hall pulled their support. With New York city appearing as a symbol of corruption, Roosevelt forced Walker to resign on September 1, 1932. He died at the age of 65 from a brain hemorrhage in 1946. In 1957 Bob hope starred in \"Beau James\" as a symbol of the jazz age romanticism. Bobby Jones was born March 17, 1902 and died on December 18, 1971. Jones was the most successful ameteur golfer ever to compete on a national and international level. Jones is the only player ever to have won the (Pre-Masters) Grand Slam, or all four major championships, in the same calender year(1930). He served as captain of the US team in 1928 and 1930, he also won two other tournaments again professionals, the 1927 Southern Open & 1930 SouthEastern Open. Won the Grand Slam June 20, 1930.
