19 GoldQuartz specimensfrom California\'s Sierra Nevada Mountains. For collectors interested in ore showing visible gold, these vibrant pieces from SierraNevada vein systems all show gold. Ibelieve you\'llbe impressed with the variety and richness offered here. You don\'t find gold ore like this every day and I consider myself fortunate to have acquired it. For what it\'s worth, I placer-mined for eighteen years. When not mining, I was making nugget jewelry, writing songs, or hanging out with fellow rock-hounds, prospectors, and snowbirds. To many a frustrated soul who hastriedhis hand at it, mining for goldmight be described asa series of futileattempts tolocate something in the earthwhichdoes not existanywhere near where you\'re looking. After considerablescratching around,a weary hunter retires with nothing to show for a day of hot, dirty work but sore hands and an aching back. Of course, if you\'re in the Yukon and have D9s at your disposal, things might go differently for you. For what it\'s worth, there\'s not many small-scale gold miners who would even dream of finding 1000 ounces of gold in their lifetime let alone find that much in a single season. On the surface, ventures into \'golden wastelands\' might look pretty unappealing, butdigging for goldoffers rewards ungaugeable by a bank account. The challenge and adventure of a good treasure hunt looms large. As long as youstay tuned to the wonder of it all, prospecting can become aformidable recreation. The scenic vistas found around the old American westwill steal your breath away. If you enjoy anoutdoor lifestyle, the mere act of working in some desolate, yet beautiful goldfield every day can bethe biggest reward of all.I sell authentic,naturally-occurring gold nuggets, flakes, gold nugget jewelry, gold quartz slab, gold quartz specimen, and, when I can get it, gold quartz cabochon. GQ (gold quartz) is, basically, rich oreeroded or taken from the veins in which the gold crystallized or formed. All the gold quartz specimens sold here will contain visible gold. I guarantee it!I poured through old mining dumps for years looking atrotten, rustyrock through a loupe, but never stumbled ona singlepiece with gold in it you could see. That still strikes me as rather amazing, that is, until you realize how many mining districts there are out in the western mining states. Every deposit has it\'s own distinctive mineral and geological characteristics. Some are rich in gold specimen both in situ (ore still locked inside the hard rock) and scattered beneath the lode(s) as placer and/or float. Mylargest gold quartz specimen, found dredging, weighed 1/4 oz.

GOLD PANNING
During my18 year stint in the goldfields, I did a fair amount of panning. My veryfirst nugget was found while panning concentrates left behind from another operation. Everyone should be so lucky as to stumble upon such inefficiency. Goldpanning, however, is mainly a sampling tool and a way to finish your \'cons\' (concentrates). The following isa \'how to\' guide. Maybe there\'sashred of info here you mightfind useful.
First, add somedirtto your pan. Thissedimentary material will in all liklihood, be a mixtureofsand, gravel, dirt, and/orclay. It might be tightly-packed (consolidated)material or itmay befairly loose(unconsolidated). Next, add water. Submerse your panunderwater completelyor fill it under the tap, with a water hose, or by some other means. Your pan is still held horizontallyduring this phase.Rest your panon the creekbottom, ground, or some other platform, andthoroughly mix thedirt with your hands. Afterlarger rocks havebeencleaned off real good, discardthem (unless they\'re nuggets the size ofhens eggs).Efficient panning can be a tediousprocess, so I would recommend that in the beginning, considerfilling your pan only half full of dirt. This means you won\'t have to work so hard. By reducing the volume, yourslurry can be mixedupa loteasier andlight yearsfaster than if your panisheaped full.Your objective is tobreakdownthe dirt, get everythingintosolution so that gold, being the heaviestmineral, will drop to the bottom. You accomplish this by disintegrating anything in yourpan that breaks apart; this means clay or calicheclods, any kind of concretionary sediments.Vegetation, like roots and moss, will have inorganic minerals adherring to it. Moss is famous for catching flour gold.Break itup! Begin to rotateyour pan vigorously. Get all the dirt moving andinto solution!It\'s not always practical, but if you\'re panning gold-bearing gravel (real paydirt!), it\'s not a bad idea to use a catchbasin like awashtub, arubber tub, cattle trough,et al. This way, you can double-check your results. Repanning all the contents would be extremely slow-going, so I recommend reconcentrating this material by running itthrough a dredge sluice, a regularsluice box,or arocker box.Usingany of these processes speeds up the process considerably. Ifthe weather\'s hot enough to dry out your dirt, you might even run this material back through a drywasher.Once you geta feelfor panning, increase your speed and force. The moreaggressive the motion, thefaster yourgold will drop. Avoid sloshing any dirt out. Learning thisropes cantake a while, but with a little practice, you\'ll soon be panninglike apro.I must emphasizeall the material has got tobroken up, dissolved, and putinto solution orthe goldwon\'t settle out. Remember, it could be very fine goldrequiringconsiderable commotion before it will beforced tosink through the mud, clay, lime, or vegetation-compacted-material. In short, it\'s imperativeyou mix and agitateyour panloadthoroughly.Once you get the hang of it, see results, and develop speed, you mightfeel skookum enough to fill your pan to therim. From the standpoint of optimizing yourrecovery, though, even expert panners are better served panning less dirt. The elimination process: Continue withyourcircular shuffling of the pan\'scontents.Gradually start tippingthe pan away from you. Lighter material (including larger rocks)now willbe closer to the top. This upper portion ofthe loadcan be skimmed or scraped over the rim of your slightly tilted panwith a flattenedhand. Best to do this underwater. If you think your dirt\'s throughly shaken, stirred, and dissolved, you should be able to rake a large amount off the top without fear of losinganygold. As you spinandtip your pan, gold that\'s settled to the bottomwill start crawling upwards into the ejectiblesandtowards the lip. To nip this in the bud, after you\'ve palmed off a good-sized portion of dirt, return your pan back to the horizontal position again all the while shaking it. Any goldcollected shouldreturn to thelowest zonein your pan. It\'s no different then gold tumblingdown along bedrock in a creek. Hydraulic forces and gravity cause it to find the deepestcracks andcrevices. Now we\'re finally down to the nitty-gritty. Repeat the tipping and raking process until you\'ve about half a cup of material. With pan slightlytilted, slowlyswirl water over the heavies; thisconcentrate will mostlikelyconsist of iron ore nodules (mainly magnetite andhematite), other high specific gravity minerals, and fine, black sands (more magnetite and hematite). Places like Idaho produce huge amounts of heavy\'ruby sands\' which is, basically, garnet. If you haven\'t yet seen gold in your pan, pouroff excess water until justenough is left to barely coveryour concentrates. Swirl the pan stringing out the concentrates. Lighter particles will be washedaway first leaving the gold (because it is the heaviest) in the \'tail\' of the black sandconcentrate.Continue swirling water in the pan to further clean the concentrates being careful not to lose any gold. Recovering gold by panning takes practice galore, but is a skill which must be mastered if one is to become proficient atprospecting.
