Fine etching, first state of two, issue 1 (Bartsch).

This superb engraving was one of a number of allegorical engravings illustrating the armed struggle between the ancient Dutch tribes and their Roman oppressors inspired by Tacitus\'s history. This historicist work was achieved by two great artists: the designer, Otto Vaenius (Otto van Veen 1556-1629), court painter to Alessandro Farnese, was influenced by the Italian mannerists but had developed his own style anticipating the Flemish baroque of his pupil Peter Paul Rubens; the engraver, Antonio Tempesta (1555-1630), specialized in battle scenes.

Having studied at Oxford University in the early 1980s I was lucky enough to learn about the rare book trade by scuttling around the markets and sale houses of London at a time when it was still quite possible to discover \"that find\". Similarly I was able to hone my specialist interests in early photography, the history of science and Helvetica, something that I hope is still reflected in the items I offer.

The aim is to offer the rare, interesting, unusual, beautiful and strange. So at the very least we hope your visit to the site to be a rewarding and enlightening experience! Daniel Good Rare Books United Kingdom
