This stunning circa 1606 map by Gerard Mercator depicts Ireland or the Emerald Isle. Oriented with north to the right, it is beautifully detailed and notes numerous towns and cities with topography beautifully rendered and a stipple engraved sea. It features a ribbon style title banner. The map depicts Ireland just a few years after the Nine Year War and the famine of Ulster. It includes Mercator\'s imprint in the bottom left and appeared in his \"Atlas sive Cosmographicae\".

Gerardum Mercator (1512-1594) was an accomplished mathematician, cartographer, globe maker and engraver but is best known for the Mercator Projection. Incorporating the newly accepted fact that the world is round, Mercator was able to render longitude lines consistently straight on a chart. Although this requires some distortion, it was of great use for navigators, and is historically important, as it is still the most commonly used projection today. Although their partnership was only indirect, Mercator and Hondius are one of the most significant pairs in the history of mapmaking.

Original. The map is in very good condition with minimal wear to centerfold and minor foxing at places. Wide margins.
