1683 Large Vellum Bound Book - Church Councils In Latin 1593 Pp + Index Rare 1st:
NOVA COLLECTIO CONCILIORUM by STEPHANUS BALUZIUS. States TOMUS PRIMUS, but there was never a second volume.
A History of CATHOLIC CHURCH COUNCILS, in LATIN.
Published by FRANCIS (FRANCISI) MUGUET, PARIS (PARISIIS) MDCLXXXIII (1683). First Edition.
VELLUM COVERS - Vellum Covered Boards and Spine, 5 raised spine bands, gilt titling / stamping on the spine, folio size, 10” x 15”.
Pagination: [1 leaf] Front Free Endpaper; iv Title-Page and Epistola; Praefatio and Elenchus; 1593 pp. Conciliorum text; Index; Colophon; [1 leaf] Rear Free Endpaper.
Illustrated with an Engraving on the first page of the Epistola; the same Engraving is repeated on the first page of Conciliorum text; the title page has a lovely engraved device; there are intricately engraved letters on the same pages that have the covers are bowed / warped outwards, more so on the front cover than the rear cover; the front spine fold is split for 4” at the bottom and 2” at the top, the rear spine fold is starting at both ends; there is some tearing to the bottom of the spine; the vellum covers have rubs, soiling, scrapes and some spotting, as you might expect, but still remain attractive in their beautifully ancient vellum coat. Page edges (edges of the closed book) are foxed, and the stained top edges have darkened.
Internally, the front and rear inner hinge has split but is holding well with the strong string binding; there are stamps and marks from “Stoke -On-Trent City Libraries” including “Withdrawn” stamps such as “Withdrawn and Sold by Stoke-On-Trent Libraries”, mainly on the endpapers, but with some others here and there throughout; there are also some library related numbers and marks here and there, again mainly on the endpapers with a few others; the first and last few pages have toning and foxing; a few pages have some edge wear including some chips, nothing affecting text that I have seen; the last few pages show the most foxing, toning and creasing, but even they are still solid and fully legible; the endpapers are original, they are worn at their gutter edge; overall the inner pages are complete, and, though showing some of their age, are still tight, bright, clean and unmarked.
A wonderful, sturdy, 330 year old, Harry Potter-esque, Large Vellum Book. Beautiful on or off the shelf. Rare.
