DETAILS

The first edition of this important equine text.

The Anatomy of An Horse was the first book in English on equine anatomy. It boasts manydescriptiveillustrations and a great deal of information on horses, from their muscles, to brains, bones and reproductive systems.

Collated, this particular copy has a facsimile frontispiece and is lacking the first plate. In place of thefirst plate is plate number XXXIV, ofwhich this copy has two. One copy of plate XXIV, as mentioned, is at thestart of the text, the other is at its correctlocation. Therefore, this work has 48 of the original 49 plates but a facsimile frontispiece and 49 plates in total.

Andrew Snape was the serjeant farrier to Charles II. The preface of this work has a dedication to theKing and royalfamily. His son, also Andrew Snape, was an Englishcleric, academic and headmaster. He was also the provost of King\'s College Cambridge.

To this work is also attached an Appendix containing two discourses, one on the Generation of Animals and the otheron the Motion of theCyle and the Circulation of the Bloud.Much of this appendix derives from the work of William Harvey.

An importantand scarce work with extremely clear illustrations copied from the woodcuts of Carlo Ruini. Ruini was one of the mostnoted anatomists of the horse in the 16th century and many of these plates were first published in his Anatomia of 1598.

With an interesting watermark to the final leaf of the dedicationof a crest with a crown,at the top and a cross that slightly resembles the military cross of the twentieth century to thebottom. Below this is \'I Conrad\' or \'Conrad\'.

A fascinating work, with bright pages and plates.
