1700\'s: Fine Judaica! 4 wonderful cute engravings of the Jewish Wall in Augsburg! Here now 4 wonderful engravings made by Johann Urich Kraus (1655-1719).Krauß was an early German illustrator, engraver and publisher in Augsburg.
He was a student of Melchior Küsel (1626- ca.1683), who was in turn a student of Matthäus Merian the Elder.
Kraus became a partner in the Augsburg publishing company of Melchior Küsel, whose daughter Johanna Sibylla he
married in 1685. Kraus became one of the most successful and respected illustraters of his generation in Augsburg.
His business was damaged in the War of the Spanish Succession, but Kraus seems to have recovered and in 1717
is recorded in the archives of Augsburg as a wealthy citizen.Jewish WallFrom 1298 to 1302, the Jews of Augsburg built a wall at their own cost, which was part of the Augsburg fortification. The \"Judenwall\" in Augsburg was located near the church Heiligkreuz between the clinker And the Wertachbruckertor. It was part of the city
fortification, but was also used as a Jewish cemetery.
The Augsburger Judenwall was built between 1298 and 1302, where the first Jewish residential quarter was located (around the Judengasse, which was
documented in 1361). The Jews had to pay for the wall and upcoming costs. In 1440, the city of Augsburg erected a fortification on the Judenwall site, which was converted into a simple bastion in 1519 and designed as a circular
fortress in 1551.
In 1632, another add. work took place.
In 1704 the fortifications on the Judenwall were removed after the Spanish Succession War. In the years 1734/35 a new building of the Ravelins took
place and in 1742 even a new building of the Bastei.
All fortifications on the site of the old Judenwalls were demolished in 1866, after Augsburg\'s fortress property had been abolished.Framed under Glas!
