This is a wonderful, original document dated 1718, Newport, Rhode Island, where Robert Barker, merchant, expects payment from Nathaniel Smith of Tauton, Massachusetts...Smith will be dragged off to jail until he pays the debt.... signed at bottom by Ebenezer Brenton. Signed on back by merchant Robert Barker and Charles Church. Document is 8x12, minor faults at top edge, overall good condition.

Major Ebenezer Brentonborn at Swansey, 1687.died about 1766, probably in South Kingstown where his will was proved. He gave his farm of 214 acres, near Worden\'s pond, to Martin Howard, Jr. (who had been the husbandof his daughter Ann, deceased,) for life, and then to Ann Howard, his granddaughter.

Charles Church, (1682-1746) son of Colonel Benjamin Church, married at Bristol, RI. and he and Hannah were members of the Congregational Church. He was Lieut. when he married, Capt. when he was baptized, and Col. when his daughter Mary married in 1746. These titles were not complimentary merely for he accompanied his distinguished father on two of his expeditions against the French and Indians. He filled a number of important civil offices, Representative, Sheriff of the County, field driver, assessor of taxes, etc.
