Offered is an entirely handwritten document signed by three Selectmen of Swanzey MA and two Constables who have issued a WARNING OUT for the following people:

Mary FORD, late of Scituate come to dwell in Swanzey on the fifth Day of October 1731 and Martha DIER (DYER) from Little Compton come into sd town to dwell and Mary DUNMARK , ann COLTON from New London (CT) came into sd Town the seventh day of November last. Lidya BROWN and Sarah CLARKE from Taunton in November last. Priscilla PERRY came from Freetown in November Last. Isaac PHINEAS and his wife Ruth and family Late of Tiverton came into sd town in December last to Dwell. James DRAKE from Old England and Joseph HOWARD from Jemecia . William WEST and his wife and family from Rehoboth in December Last are come to Dwell in sd Swanzey with out Liberty from the selectmen and contrary to law.

you are therefore Required in his majesties Name to warn all the above named persons and their families to Depart this Town of Swanzey within fourten days after Warning and not to return again without Liberty or sufficient Security to keep the Town of Swanzey harmless from any Charge that may arise by any of you fail not as you will answer ye penalty of the Law in that behalf , etc.....

Dated in Swanzey the first day of January anno Domini 1731/2 and in the fifth year of his majesties Reign George the Second...Grace of God of Grate Brittain...

"Warning Out"

A "warning out" was a legal formality, sort of like "irreconcilable
differences" in a current day's divorce court. The theory was that someone
had lately come into town and might become a burden on the town's resources
from poverty. They were therefore immediately run out of town. Well, that
was the theory. In practice, one of the town's constables showed up at the
person's or family's location (often a residence) and issued the formal
charge to be gone. The warning itself, regardless of whether the person or
family departed, served to absolve the town of any future responsibility,
and so whether the person warned out actually left made no difference. On
many occasions, perhaps even in the majority of cases, the person warned
out settled in town, bought property, and in all respects became a
productive member of the community.

It had nothing to do with the warned person's former activities or
financial standing. "
