A truly fascinating find, this is a RARE early 18th century English King James Holy Bible, containing both the Old and New Testaments, preceded by The Book of Common Prayer, with the Whole Book of Psalms concluding the book. Bound in a fantastic contemporary attractive dark morocco with gilt borders and enhancements, also with stunning silver metal engraved plates to centers of both boards( with owners initials \'E F\' on front, rear dated 1737). The upper fly leaf contains gorgeous calligraphic swan and inscriptions by one |Elizabeth Froad, for whom presumably the binding was commissioned. Single remaining silver metal clasp to foreedge (one lacking), retaining the engraved silver metal cornerpieces. Spine enhanced with extensive gilt with five raised bands. Slight rubbing and general wear as shown. Sadly, the upper board has since detached; however the rear remains attached with the lower 1/3 hinge and joint starting to split. Text in double column, marbled EPs. Textblock is firm- generally in great condition internally ,a few leaves with some tone throughout and with a few small scattered stains, occasional early ink ownership marks, else fine. The Holy Bible, although unpaginated, remains 100% complete, signatures read A-Mm12, the Apocrypha is mentioned in the list of books but is not required, and is not present. Separate title page for New Testament, register is continuous. The Book of Common Prayer, unpaginated, signatures read A-D12; also complete. The Whole Book of Psalms, unpaginated, signatures read A-D12, and again is also complete. Measures 6.5\" x 4\" x 2\". A fantastic example of a rare personal fine binding- a true gem for any collection, and a treasure that only few can call their own. Good luck!
