A very scarce copy of this poem by JohnDyer.
Dyer (1699 - 1757) was a painter and Welsh poet turned clergyman who maintained an interest in his Welsh ancestry. He was most recognised for Wordsworth’s sonnet, To The Poet, John Dyer, addressed to him, and for Grongar Hill, one of Dyer’s six early poems.
Published in 1740, The Ruins of Rome was a philosophic–moralistic and descriptive poem of 545 lines based on a narrative of his ascent of the Palatine hill.Written inMiltonic blank-verse itchronicles the disappointing natural scenery of the naked Italian mountains and muddy rivers, as written in the opening lines.
Featuring an engraved illustration to title page and some lovely decorative head and tail pieces and illuminated capitals elsewhere.
First edition.
CONDITION
Disbound. Pages remain attached though binding is a little tender in places. Otherwise in very good, bright condition for its age with a faint tidemark to lower margin of some pages and just the occasional mark or spot elsewhere. The author\'s name has been added in contemporary ink to the title page.
