This item is a wonderful, original document dated 1757, where Treasurer Joseph Talcott has signed an order of payment to Theophilus Nichols, Commissary, now buying forage for the troops being raised foe an Expedition to Crown Point...signed at lower right by Talcott. Back is signed by Nichols as having received the funds from the constable of Stratford, Connecticut. Document is 3x6, center fold split, repaired with acid free archival tape, minor edge fringes, else in overall good condition.

Theophilus, son of Richard Nichols, was born at Stratford, March 31, 1703, and died there April 7, 1774. He is buried in the old Stratford burying ground. His will was dated January 13, 1773, and proved May 9, 1774. His inventory, dated May 23, 1774, amounted to two thousand one hundred and seventy-nine pounds and seven pence. He married (first), January 2, 1724, Sarah Curtis, who died September 26. 1769, aged sixtyseven, a daughter of Lieutenant Ebenezer Curtis. He married (second) Mehitable Peet, who died September 20, 1771, aged about fifty-two, widow of William Peet.

Whereas, in 1756-1757 the Colony of Connecticut   agreed to join with the other three New England governments and the Province of New York, to raise forces to go on an expedition against Crown Point and to remove the French encroachments on the Lake Iroquois and places adjacent.

An expedition be carried on against Crown Point and another against the French settlements and encroachments on Lake Ontario, and that both armies rendezvous at their respective places of destination as soon as possible in the spring, and that an army of ten thousand men will be necessary for the expedition against Crown Point.
