The British Carpenter, or, A treatise on carpentry. Containing the most concise and authentic rules of that art, in a more useful and extensive method, than has been made public.

London: Printed by H. Baldwin, 1765. 5th Edition.

Gorgeous collection of 60+ beautifully engraved illustrations of various types of architecture housed in its original binding. This was first published in 1733 under the title, A Treatise on Carpentry. Elizabeth Harris identifies this as the first comprehensive work on carpentry in English; evidently Helen Park found more copies in eighteenth century America (twenty-seven) than of any other single architectural title. Even George Washington owned a copy (the 1768 edition).Includes many aspects of carpentry such as the building of roofs, bridges, domes, vaults, spires, and stair-building.Engraved frontispiece, (viii), 72 pages, (60) plates, 2 of which are folding. Text is clean, sound and complete. Occasional scattered faint browning and a few small stains, otherwise text and engravings generally clean and crisp, as shown. Boards have since detached, with the spine demonstrating gilt ruled raised bands. Leather with some wear and exposure at the extremities. 10.5\" x 8.25\". Good
