1793 Thomas Paine Hanging Farthing VERY RARE CHOICE
According to the paperwork that came with this token, this piece has a pedigree going back to Spink\'s January 1910 sale and later appearing on March 1958 Glendining Sale. Although I have owned many Paine tokens, I don\'t believe I ever had another one of these. This is Middlesex DH-1107. The most recent sale of another 1107 was from September 2014 (see last photo). That piece brought $910, struck from an earlier die state than ours.
Our offering is for a very nice, higher grade piece that was struck from near terminal die state. Not many could have been struck after this massive die failure. The rough weak spot to the left of the hanging figure\'s legs are not abrasion or defect. It is from the die failure and is as struck. The weakness and roughness of the left page of the book are also from die failure. Because of dies buckling, that area, along with the corresponding areas on the obverse, could not get a good contact strike. Those areas are basically unstruck and as issued.
Enough of that.... Anyways, we have a very rare piece here that is in high grade with nice color with remnants of original mint sheen in places. That piece, which brought $910, is salted away and is not coming out any time soon. We have a nice rare piece here for your consideration. Go for it! Did you know Paine tokens are considered political collectibles as well? Oh yeah.
