An early octavo edition of Cook\'s third voyage, the objective of which was to find a northwest passage. The party stopped at Kerguelen Island; Tasmania; New Zealand; and the Cook, Tonga, and Society islands; then sailed north and discovered the Hawaiian Islands, which Cook named the Sandwich Islands (and which he considered his most important discovery), and Christmas Island. They charted the west coast of America from northern California through the Bering Strait, until thwarted by pack ice, and returned to Hawaii for the winter, where Cook was killed by the natives. Clerke took over command, and when he died the ships returned to England under John Gore. The plates show the natives and island scenes. These plates reproduce, on a small scale, most of the plates from the atlas of the British version, and make this the most extensively illustrated travel book published in 18th- century.
