Isn\'t this a happy little vessel? Lightlycirculated this Kent DH-38 token is the only one issued from Romney. Romney was a cinque port town until 1287 when a tremendous storm washed so much silt into the harbor that it even changed the course of the river. Today the original harbor is but a pond quite a bit inland from the shoreline and the intervening land is a marsh. Commercial tokens like this one were produced quickly for minimum cost which may account for the error made in the portrayal of the arms background. Apparently the issuer, J. Sawyer didn\'t mind since the tokens were well executed by Wyon as diesinker and Lutwyche as manufacturer. The obverse features a small sailboat surrounded by laurel branches with the legend The Success above and some minor wear showing on the upper edge. The reverse coat of arms is bold as is the legend though the lions in center show wear to the high points, namely the faces. This is always the first area to go. The legend Romney Halfpenny Token identifies for us the town of issuance and the edge reads Payable at John Sawyer\'s Romney, giving the user the redemption location. Showing a few surface marks, this popular 1794 ship token is mildly circulated and a lovely reddish brown tone.
