[] ~ LIVERPOOL NAVAL ARCHITECTURE HUTCHINSON, William A treatise on naval architecture founded upon philosophical and rational principles, towards establishing fixed rules for the best form and proportional dimensions In Length, Breadth and Depth, of Merchants Ships in general, and also The Management of them to the greatest advantage, by practical seamanship; with important hints and remarks relating thereto, especially both for defence defence and attacks in war at sea, from long approved experience Liverpool. Printed by T. Billinge, 1794.

Quarto. xv, [1], 303pp, [1]. With engraved frontispiece and 12 engraved plates, one of which folding. In early marbled boards, recently re-backed (with sympathetic new endpapers) and re-cornered in brown calf, gilt, with maritime devices and contrasting red morocco lettering-piece. Slight surface rubbing to boards and extremities, else a handsome copy. Light damp-staining to final few plates, else a fine and crisp copy.

William Hutchinson's (1715-1801) life was almost entirely concerned with the sea; ranging from East Indies, Chinese, West Indies and Mediterranean sea-trading, through service in the Royal Navy to successful privateering under Fortunatus Wright and later on his own account, before holding various positions in Liverpool docks and contributing pioneering efforts in the fields of lighthouses and lifeboats.First published in 1777, his Treatise on Practical Seamanship was a remarkably, although perhaps unsurprisingly given the author's experience, wide-ranging eighteenth-century guide to seamanship - and although provincial in imprint, is worldly in outlook. It was subsequently issued in three further increasingly enlarged (and variously titled) eighteenth-century editions. By the appearance of this fourth and final edition, the work's title, A treatise on naval architecture, better reflected the contents, which includes guidance on the construction, administration and arming of ships, with specific advice 'on letter of marque ships and privateers; and fitting them out', 'on stationing and exercising merchant's ship's crews for war; and on exercising manoeuvres how to defend or attack a ship', 'on treating prisoners of war', 'on the health and diseases of seamen', 'on the bloody flux and the sea scurvy' and 'on a maritime academy for Liverpool'.
