[COLONIAL AMERICAN COPY OF EPHRATA, PENNSYLVANIA PSALTER]
EPHRATA:
In der Neuen Buchdruckterey, bey Salomon Mayer, This highly scarce German metrical Psalm book is a rare edition, printed in Pennsylvania by Dunker brethren of the Ephrata Cloister, complete with all pages present and in fantastic shape. A popular book originally published in Germany and America in 1791, this early American edition became quite popular with some sects, such as the Dunkers, Mennonites, etc. This German American hymnal was published without music, as were most hymnals of the time.German Seventh Day Baptists led by Conrad Beissel had established the Ephrata Cloister, a Protestant monastic community in Ephrata, Pennsylvania. Christoph Saur I had been with Beissel in Ephrata before either man had established a printing business. Saur, in his first year of printing, began work on an 800-page hymnal for Ephrata. The Ephrata Cloister’s own publishing business began soon after Saur’s, and between 1745 and 1795, and produced over 40 books. In addition to German New Testaments, Psalters, and hymnals, the Cloister published, in German, The bloody Arena (Martyrs Mirror), the most massive book ever printed in Colonial America. Bound in well kept original PA German leather, the spine with unevenly made raised bands; lacking the original clasps but with the catches present. Some leather losses at the spine extremities.Hinges and joints intact. Binding and text block solid and tight, some minor toning and light staining throughout. Signed on front EP by a Magdalena Meyer, dated 1801, with the other EP partially excised, as shown, else unmarked. A fantastic and historic find. Measures 6.75\" x 4\" x 2\" thick. A RARE EPHRATA IMPRINT/ PENNSYLVANIA GERMAN HYMNAL.
