$800.00

Early 1900’s Antique 18.5” SIZE 8 BébéJUMEAU 1907 Open Mouth CHILD DOLL

This sale is for a beautiful blue-eyed older child antique doll produced by the French firm which was started by the Jumeau family (Pierre and his son,Emile). They were well renowned for their production of exquisite bisque- headedBébé dolls that are prized by antique doll collectors since the start of their production. This is one of the more commonmolds, the 1907 and was produced with the transition from the Jumeau line to SFBJ (or so I believe). She was sold to me as Jumeau. This doll is a delightful example of an older child who shows innocence and wonder-- please see all of her pictures. She was my first French doll Ipurchased several years ago and she came without clothing (that is how I could better afford her at that time). HOWEVER,it was extremely satisfying to dress her in mostly antique (prior to 1920’s) clothing. The vintage pieces are the silk dress which is nearly antique around 90 years old (around 1930’s) are her shoes around 50 years old (around 1970\'s) and these fit wonderfully well.

PLEASE SEE PICTURES TO GET FULL IDEA OF THISWONDERFUL DOLL.

Her features are:

·A Jumeau size 8 which equates to 47 CM or 18.5”tall.

·Chocolate brown glass sleep eyes that closeeasily (see picture) and are symmetric from side to side, with painted upperand lower lashes and feathered brows. The wax is completely intact on both eyes (see pictures).

·Expert blushing of the cheeks and lips with twodots in the nostrils. There are six UPPERteeth with outlined mustache upper lip and outlined lower lip—they areperfectly painted.

·Her bisque is in excellent condition and has NOcracks, chips hairlines, or fire lines. Noteven any chipping around her holes for her pierced ears. She has two (2) tinypepper spots on lower cheek (one on each side).

oShe was tested by the original seller fromFrance before she was shipped and I had it done after I purchased her by aprofessional doll repair person (who ONLY cleaned her composition lower armsand legs—NO repaint or touch ups to anywhere on her body).

·She is on her original 9-ball jointed wood compositionbody has a bit of an hour glass shape depicting an older child. She has ALL fingers and toes intact WITH the ORIGINALfinish. She truly in excellent conditionconsidering her age. Only her ring finger has a small area at palm surface bythe tip where the composition is missing but this finger is completely intact—Idid not refinish this. There is anoccasional rub on the body but the joints and neck socket are in amazingcondition. The hands probably have themost wear- another small ding on her right middle finger and a crack on the backof the left hand. There are really very few issues.

·Original dark brown mohair wig with pink satinbows and cardboard pate. The wig itself is in the original set and is full atthe top and sides but a bit sparse (thinning) only at the back (the hat helpsthis).

·Markings incised at the back of the neck:

o1907

o8

·She is securely strung. She must have been restrung at one time sinceshe has a different hand.

Her antique or vintage clothing is in excellentcondition and well-constructed and includes:

· Vintage and nearly antique- I was told 1930\'s (seller from Ruby Lane).Golden peach silk dress with elaborate ecrulace throughout the waist, neck and bodice.Mother-of-pearl (MOP) buttons and same material bows (one in the backand one at the right side of her dress (I am assuming the left bow is missingbut there is no tears indicating damage). The bodice is completely lined in off-white cotton. The bodice has an inset and large rufflesform a large platter collar. It is notexactly short sleeve since it extends to her elbow and is puffed at this end. Thedress has three (3) mother-of-pearl buttons in the back and two (2) in the front bodice.

·Underneath she wears:

o Antique.Cream colored long cotton (with lace trim) fullslip that is sleeveless. MOP buttons inthe back and is missing one at the top. This is a bit big for her but I used itanyway. All of the other pieces listed fither snugly.

o Antique.Cream colored half-slip with all buttons intactwith an eyelet trim bottom. There is a cotton under-slip that makes it fuller.

o Antique.Cream colored cotton bloomers that extend toher ankle that have rolls of folds and lace at the bottom.

o Antique.Cream colored knee-high mesh stockings.

o Vintage.Turquoise brocade shoes with aqua silk bows—LOVETHEM!!!

o Antique.Medium Gold puffy silk hat with silk flowers—WONDERFUL!!!

Theclothes and hat purchased separately cost me around $350.00. They are simply exquisite but I wanted someof the best since she was the first French doll that I purchased.

CONDITION:Generally Excellent! There is fine quality bisque with expert and delicatepainting of features and crisp modeling. She has perfect bisque socket head that is free of hairlines, cracks, orrestoration. The expert painting of her is exceptional and the lips andnostrils are perfect. She isstill on her original composition older child body. The condition issues are mentioned above when describing the body).

After purchasing her Inoticed that the hands are different size so one of them must be a replacement(I think the original is the right hand). The previous owner said the eyes had been reset professionally in thepast several years. Otherwise, this dollis in such excellent shape considering her age.

Jan Foulke’s Guide toDolls (2011) lists her value at $1600.00.Linda Edwards DOLL VALUES 12th Ed. (2012) lists her valuearound $1900.00 - $2200.00. These are the most recent books reflecting doll values. THE other1907 dolls are listed in on are in the $1000.00 - $1800.00 range and up to$2200.00 on Ruby Lane Antiques. Her cost on forBuy-It-Now is a reasonable one and is almost half price.
