Doan’s Pills werefirst produced by James Doan, a doctor who lived in Kingsville, Canada. Sickpeople were known to take long journeys to go to see him, and be treated withhis medicine. He prepared his medicine with his own hands, making it withshrubs, and roots, and herbs, which he gathered in the woods and fields nearhis home. He made many kinds of medicine, but was best known for Doan’sBackache Kidney Pills.

Brater’s Powder

Brater\'s powderwas manufactured in Port Washington, NY as a remedy for asthmatic episodes. Youwere to take some of the powder and place it onto a plate. You were then tolight the powder and fan the smoke into your face and inhale it. They actuallymade cigarettes of the same components during this time period, as ironicallyit was not until the 1920\'s that medical experts decided that smoke and smokingmay worsen respiratory ailments.

Dr Scholl’s

William MathiasScholl was born in La Porte, Indiana and studied medicine at Loyola UniversityChicago. During his studies, while working in a shoe store in the evenings, hebecame interested in podiatry. While still amedical student, he invented the \"Foot-Eazer\" to correct archproblems. After becoming a podiatrist in 1904, he started his own company andwent on to develop more than 1,000 foot aids. Dr. Scholl’s now marketseverything from insoles to wart removers to medicated foot powder.

Puretest

In 1902, LouisK. Liggett persuaded 40 druggists to invest in a drug company that wouldmanufacture and distribute products in franchised stores. In 1903, the UnitedDrug Company began operations. The stores and products were known by the name\"Rexall,\" for \"king of all.\"

Rexall druggistsenjoyed significant advantage over their competition because of United DrugCompany’s business model—cooperative manufacturing. Most franchised dealerswere stock-holding, dividend-earning members of the cooperative and were wellaware the most profitable items in the store were United Drug controlled brandslike Rexall, Puretest, Firstaid, Harmony Perfumes and Liggett’s Candy.

Tums

In 1928, JimHowe, a pharmacist in St. Louis, Missouri, developed Tums in the basement ofhis home while treating his wife\'s indigestion. The remedy caught on, andcommercial production began in 1930 by the Lewis-Howe Company, which took itsname from Howe and his uncle, A. H. Lewis, who was a pharmacist in Bolivar,Missouri; Howe worked in his uncle\'s drugstore as a teenager.

Nature’s Remedy

Nature’s RemedyTablets, “the safe dependable all-vegetable laxative,” was produced by theLewis-Howe Company, which was founded in 1930 by James Howe and A. H. Lewis inSt. Louis, Missouri.

Mennen QuinsanaPowder

In 1939, theMennen Company first introduced Quinsana as an over-the-counter treatment forathlete’s foot. Mennen’s expertise in producing innovative and effectivetalcum-based powders and personal care items was well known since its foundingin 1878, and Quinsana was no exception. The absorption properties of the powdermade it especially effective in eliminating the moisture that allows skinfungus to grow.
