1800\'s $5 JAMES RIVER KANAWHA COMPANY VIRGINIA CANAL BOAT TRAIN WASHINGTON UNC:
$75.00

This beautiful remainder note dates back to the 1830\'s and features a canal boat and passenger train running side by side. This note also features a square portrait of George Washington on the left who first proposed the canal project when he was a young man surveying the mountains of West Virginia looking for a way to open a water route to the west. Originally founded as the James River company in 1785, it opened the first commercial canal in the United States in 1790. The work stalled for a number of years and then in 1835 work on the canal resumed under the new James River and Kanawha company. It is a unique note in that it is aninterest bearing promise to pay and redeemable at their office in Richmond Virginia in current notes and that it also displays a canal scene similar to the one that the note was financing.By 1851 the canal extended 196.5 miles west of Richmond to Buchanan. American Civil War damage, interruptionof commerce and competition from the railroads eventually lead to the demise of the canal andthe company was sold in 1878 to the Richmond andAlleghenyRailroad company. As part of Richmond\'s revival and redevelopment of its waterfront, a portion of the canal has been restored and is still in use today. Banknotes with their wealth of history and symbolism make great collectibles. The color photo of Richmond, Virginia is for illustration only and is not included with the note.
