We are very pleased to offer this Rare, Incredible LargeButtocks Basket with Double Lid in Original Green Blue Paint. This came to us just two days ago from a 40+ year private collection here in North Carolina and has never before been offered for sale.This is an incredible basket. It\'s purposewasto carry chicks to market. The double lid has a vent woven intoeach side, providing ventilation for the chicks inside. This is the first basket of this kind we\'ve ever had. Itwas excellentlywoven by askilled basket weaver. Itisvery tightly handwoven inrib construction and bentwood frame. Thebentwood handle and frameare hand carved. The rim is also handcarved hickory and is fingerlapped. The handle and lid areattached to the rim with wooden pegs. The splint is thinly cut and only 1/8\" wide and impeccably woven. It is in Original Green Blue Paint, the wonderful greenish blue paint that used to be found on Southern pieces but rarely these days. It is beautiful! This is a strong basket, heavy for a basket because it had to be strong to transport chicks. It is in remarkable condition but does have a few minor breaks in the splintwhich came fromits use and its age, and a very minor repair in the splint on the base.Toward the bottom ofone end isa little 1\" x 1/2\" hole chewed long agoby maybe a chick or mouse, adding to the basket\'s character.Thisbasket dates to about the 1850\'sto 1860\'s. It measures 14 1/2\" x 14 1/2\"x 13\" tall.This is an early, very special,very Rare, Phenomenal Buttocks Basket with Vented Double Lid in Original Greenish Blue Paint woven to carry chicks to market. A true Survivor!
