This group of three writs, dated 1802-1829, Worcester, Massachusetts....signatures include Isaac Davis, Solomon Leland and Joseph Wood . Each document isabout 6x8 inches, others signatures on back, overall very good condition.

Isaac Davis(June 2, 1799 – April 1, 1883) was alawyerandpoliticianactive inWorcester, Massachusetts.

Davis was born inNorthborough, Massachusetts, graduated fromBrown Universityin 1822, studied law until admitted to the bar in 1825, and began the practice inWorcester, Massachusetts, where he soon rose to eminence. He was, from 1843 to 1854, a member of theMassachusetts Senate, and three times mayor of Worcester from 1856 to 1859, in 1858, and 1861. Davis also served on the boards of various banks and railroad companies.

Davis was a promoter of popular education. From 1838 to 1851 Davis was on the board of trustees ofBrown University, and became a Fellow in 1851; Davis also was a trustee of Columbian College (nowGeorge Washington University),Norwich University, and Waterville College (nowColby College). Davis served as first President of theWorcester AcademyBoard of Trustees, from 1834 to 1873, and for some time was an active member of the Massachusetts Board of Education. He was president of theWorcester County Horticultural Societyfrom 1844 to 1848.He was elected a member of theAmerican Antiquarian Societyin 1841,and later served on its board of councilors from 1850 to 1883.

Solomon Leland(1743-1808) served as sergeant and lieutenant at various alarms in theMassachusettsmilitia. He was born and died inSutton.

Olding\'s regt.; term, during war; also, list of men mustered by Thomas Newhall, Muster Master for Worcester Co.; Capt. Coburn\'s co., Col. Alden\'s regt.; mustered March 6, 1777; also, Private, Capt. Asa Coburn\'s co., Col. Brooks\'s regt.; Continental Army pay accounts for service from March 1, 1777, to April 20, 1778; reported discharged; also, Capt. Coburn\'s co., Col. Ichabod Alden\'s regt.; return dated Albany, Jan. 12, 1778; mustered by Capt. Newhall, County Muster Master; also, Capt. Coburn\'s co., (late) Col. Alden\'s regt.; return of men who were in camp before Aug. 15, 1777, etc., certified at Cherry Valley, Feb. 24, 1779; reported discharged May -, 1778.

He later was chief of Magistrates and Justice of Peace for Worcester County.
