A collection of the written works of Jonathan Swift, the eminent eighteenth-century satirist.
A new edition, corrected and revised by John Nichols.
Eighteen volumes of nineteen only (missing volume II).
John Nichols (2 February 1745 – 26 November 1826) was an English printer, author and antiquary.
Including his poems, stories, essays and much more, along with a memoir of his life.
Swift is remembered for works such as Gulliver's Travels, A Modest Proposal, A Journal to Stella, Drapier's Letters, The Battle of the Books, An Argument Against Abolishing Christianity, and A Tale of a Tub. Swift is probably the foremost prose satirist in the English language, and is less well known for his poetry. Swift originally published all of his works under pseudonyms – such as Lemuel Gulliver, Isaac Bickerstaff, MB Drapier – or anonymously. He is also known for being a master of two styles of satire: the Horatian and Juvenalian styles.
Arranged by Thomas Sheridan.
Thomas Sheridan (1719 – 14 August 1788) was an Irish stage actor, an educator, and a major proponent of the elocution movement. He received his M.A. in 1743 from Trinity College in Dublin, and was the godson of Jonathan Swift.
