1813 Classic Head Large Cent 1C

UPDATE: This coin was sold and then returned for a refund because the purchaser felt there was more corrosion than he determined there to be based on the photo. Although my write up clearly states it is the responsibility of the buyer to validate the coin\'s value prior to offerding, I did refund his money. I have added additional photos and lower my startingprice, but please be advised that ALL SALES ARE FINAL, so please inspect carefully before offerding. This is a very rare and key date, but the coins in this 6-year Classic Head series were minted from inferior metal with impurities and therefore corrosion and Environmental effects are common. The normal price/value of a similar coin in the same condition without corrosion would be in the $500+ range, but I\'ve priced it to take the corrosion into account. Please be certain of your decision to offer based on the photos or any questions you may ask as I will not be able to refund going forward and continue to take on additional costs of shipping and relisting. Thanks - original write up is below:

Here are some pointsfor consideration -

2018 Red Book description & definitions (based on this specific coin):

Classic Head: \"This group (1808-1814) does not compare in sharpness and quality to those struck previously (1793-1807) nor to those struck later (1816 on). The copper used was softer, having more metallic impurity. This impaired the wearing quality of the series. For this reason, collectors find greater difficulty in obtaining these dates in choice condition.\"

Because of the softness of the copper and impurities, these coins were very susceptibleto corrosion and wear, as you can see on the obverse of this coin. Yet, from a detail standpoint, this coin displays most of the characteristics noted below in Fine & Very Fine. Were it not for the corrosion on the obverse, this coin might possibly grade out as high as very fine. Here are the Red Book grading definitions for this specific coin:

Good - Legends, stars, and date worn, but plain.
V. Good - LIBERTY all readable. Liberty\'s ear visible. Details worn but plain.
Fine - Hair on forehead & before ear nearly smooth. Ear & hair under ear sharp.
V. Fine - Some detail in all hair lines. Slight wear on leaves on reverse.

Current prices (based on Good / V. Good / Fine / Very Fine grades):

  • PCGS Price Guide: $150 (G) / $300 (VG) / $550 (F) / $1,375 (VF)
  • CDN Collectors Price Guide (retail): $130 (G) / $228 (VG) / $520 (F) / $845 (VF)

I\'ve tried to set the starting offer for the coin with that inmind.
