Dr John Campbell\'s biographical work.

With a frontispiece to each volume.

Complete in eight volumes.

With the bookplate of one John Foster to the front pastedown of all volumes. The bookplate features the family crest as well as two ships. The motto \'Amor Omnia Vincit\' translates as Love Conquers All. To the bottom of the bookplate is written \'Thacker Spink, Calcutta\'.

This work was originally published between 1742 and 1744. It was still being issued up to a hundred years after his death.

John Campbell was a Scottish historian. He had written several popular historical works before his The Lives of British Admirals and Other Eminent British Seamen. However, this work was his most popular. It was originally four volumes and was expanded into eight by John Berkenhout and Redhill York.

CONDITION

In uniform full calf bindings. Externally, worn. Particularly to the spines and joints. Singe marks to several spines of multiple volumes, Worst to volume II which has singing to the rear board as well. Heavy rubbing to the head and tail of all spines as well as patches to the boards. Crack to rear joint of volume II. Front hinge to volume III is tender with cords showing. Crack to head of front joint to volumes IV and V. Small crack to head of rear joint to volume V. VolumeVI is lacking backstrip. Rear joint to volume VI is tender and front jointstarting butfirm, as ishinge. Front joint to volume VIII is cracked and starting but firm. Fronthinge to volume VIIIis slightly strained but firm. Internally, all volumes are firmly bound.Water damage internally to volume VI resulting in tide marksthroughout and cockling, not affecting text. Pages are slightly age toned withspotting to the first and last few pages with scattered spots throughout. Overall: FAIR.
