EXTREMELY scarce early NY imprint of Hardie\'s Masonic Monitor; in fact, Worldcat denotes that zero copies are held anywhere worldwide, making this a true early American Masonic gem. Illustrated with a gorgeous frontis. Original leather in nice shape with the spine featuring a red and gilt leather title label and gilt rule. Sadly, trhe front board has since detached and the rear board is lacking, however pages all bound, present and in acceptable shape with some browning and light staining. Complete. Fronbt EP and title with stamps and ownership inscriptions from Samuel Tuthill of Southport, dated 1819, presented to him by a Thomas Foote in NY on Feb 27th, 1819; additional signatures O C Hillard (1907), Oscar J Harvey, notable historian and lawyer (see below) of Wilkes-Barre, PA, and lastly R R Van Horn in 1922. Capt. Samuel Tuthill was a leading and prominent citizen of Southport,NY, and one of its earliest settlers.He was the commanding officer of a company recruited in Chemung Countyfor the War of 1812 and was ordered to the frontier. They had proceededas far as Batavia when they were ordered back, the war being ended. Tuthill died in 1851, at the age of eighty-five. His funeral was oneof the largest known tip to that time in the valley. Good luck!
Historian Oscar Jewell Harvey

Oscar J. Harvey (1851-1922) along with Isaac Chapman, Charles Miner and George Peck are the eminent early historians of the Wyoming Valley. Harvey was born in Wilkes-Barre and was a ninth generation American. He received his B.A. and M.A. from Lafayette College where he was a member of the Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity and the Washington Literary Society. Following college, Harvey taught at Wyoming Seminary but later entered a legal apprenticeship in the law office of Caleb Wright and Isaac Hand. He was admitted to the Luzerne County Bar in 1876.
