A member of the New York Historical Society, William Darby journeyed from New York City to Detroit in 1818. A travel narrative through letters with extensive notes and appendices, Darby describes Buffalo, Niagara Falls, Cleveland and Detroit. His observations in the St. Lawrence River Valley and Great Lakes shore towns combines topographical accuracy with literary merit. Darby also published Gazetteers and Emigrant\'s Guides to the American west, underlining his fundamental interest in westward settlement and commercial development both of which are well reflected in the present work.CONDITION: VERY GOOD. Paper spine binding worn and aged, revealing signatures. Paper label aged but surprisingly present and readable. Covers and all gatherings well attached. Maps and all leaves present as well as errata slip. Maps properly folded without tears or repairs. Niagara map toned compared to text pages. Text pages clean, except for title page spotting and except for soiling and occasional acid burn issues on extended untrimmed margins. Some paper choices include some short sheet edge margins which do not constitute losses, but reduce the very wide margins provided in the printing, such short edges are deckled. BINDING: Original blue paper boards with printed paper label. All edges untrimmed. Brown linen solander box with red leather gilt tooled letter title patch.
