A nicely bound copy of this conduct work.

This work is a collectionof letters addressed to Mrs HesterChapone\'s niece, and refer to many subjects such as economy, government, politeness, religion as well as the heart and affection.

HesterChapone\'s niece was 15 at the time of her writing these letters. The main focus are Chapone\'s encouragement of rational understanding through reading the Bible, history and literature. She explicitly states that sentimental novels were to be avoided.

The work received a lot of praise after its publication with over 28 editions printed, including a translation into French.

CONDITION

In a full calf binding with gilt and blind stamping to boards. Externally, smart with patches of slight rubbing to the extremities and joints. Bookplate to front pastedown, William Botfield. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are slightly age toned to edges with the odd spot throughout. Overall: VERY GOOD.
