1820s Antique Federal TABERNACLE MIRROR Gilt Reverse Painted FISHING SCENE N/R:
$58.00

Handsome antique tabernacle mirror, New England, circa 1820s, gilded gessoed wood, the two-part form featuring concave side and bottom moldings, lower corner blocks, and a horizontal cornice, the upper portion featuring a reverse-painted pastoral scene with two men fishing on a riverbank with a church or similar structure in the background, the lower portion with the original mirror plate, the overall dimensions approx. 19\" x 11\" x 1-7/8\", retaining the original undisturbed wood backing. Scattered tiny superficial losses to gilt/gesso (all quite minor and commensurate with age); the reverse-painted panel with tight crack (i.e., with no separation) and scattered lifting and losses to paint, primarily in the top half of the image; otherwise very good, sturdy, well-preserved condition.

Increasingly difficult to find in this combination of early date (reflecting a lingering Federal influence) and compact size. Despite the damages to the painted scene, it can still be enjoyed as is or replaced with another eglomise panel, additional mirror, print or photo, etc.

PAYMENT/SHIPPING: Successful U.S. buyer pays $2.50 for carefully packed First Class shipping (international buyers: inquire for rates); PayPal. Please see my other sales for rare and vintage books, historical and advertising ephemera, photos, artwork, and mid-century design.
